Upcoming Elections in India — 2027
Every Indian legislature has a five-year term, and an election must be completed before it expires. That deadline is knowable years in advance; the schedule is not. What follows is the deadline, plus the by-elections, Rajya Sabha and Council polls that already have dates.
These are due-by dates, not announced schedules. The Election Commission publishes a date only weeks before a poll, and this calendar does not track those announcements (single-seat by-elections, which do have dates, are listed below). Some states poll alongside the Lok Sabha — Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim did in 2024, as their terms ended in the same window. A house dissolved early votes sooner, and one under President’s rule can wait longer.
Upcoming Bypolls
By-elections for single vacant seats, with announced polling and counting dates. Tracked separately from the results dataset.

Rajya Sabha, Council & Presidential Elections
Indirect and council elections — Rajya Sabha, Legislative Councils (MLC) and the offices of President and Vice-President — tracked apart from the Lok Sabha and assembly calendar
- Uttar Pradesh: 10
- Uttarakhand: 1
- West Bengal: 1 (by-election)
Notification 29 Sep; nominations close 6 Oct, scrutiny 7 Oct, withdrawal 9 Oct. The Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand terms end in November; the West Bengal seat fell vacant on a resignation.
- Uttar Pradesh: 11 (5 graduates’, 6 teachers’)
- Bihar: 8 (4 graduates’, 4 teachers’)
- Maharashtra: 5 (3 graduates’, 2 teachers’)
- Karnataka: 4 (2 graduates’, 2 teachers’)
Graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies, voted on by registered graduates and teachers rather than by MLAs. Notification 29 Sep; nominations close 6 Oct, scrutiny 7 Oct, withdrawal 9 Oct.
- Kerala: 3
The three members elected in 2021 retire on 23 April 2027. No schedule announced yet.
Elected by MPs and members of the state legislative assemblies. Article 62 requires the election to be completed before the sitting President’s five-year term expires; the Election Commission has not announced a schedule.
- Puducherry: 1
The sitting member’s term ends on 6 October 2027. No schedule announced yet.
The next large round: 70 elected seats across 20 states, with terms ending between April and August 2028. Uttar Pradesh (11), Punjab (7), Maharashtra (6) and Tamil Nadu (6) have the most.
Elected by the members of both Houses of Parliament. C. P. Radhakrishnan took office on 12 September 2025 after the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, and the term runs five years from that date.
This list is hand-curated, not exhaustive. “Announced” means the Election Commission has published a schedule; “Due” means only that a term or retirement deadline is known. Each entry was checked against its source as of the date shown.

Assembly Elections Due in 2027
7 state assemblies have five-year terms ending in 2027: Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Together these legislatures cover 940 elective seats. These are constitutional deadlines under Article 172 (assemblies) and Article 83 (Lok Sabha) of the Constitution, not announced polling dates — the Election Commission of India will announce each state's exact schedule separately, typically only weeks before voting begins.
Local Body & Civic Elections
Municipal corporation and panchayat polls — a different layer from the state/Lok Sabha calendar above, tracked separately because local bodies carry no constitutional term clock
First election to the newly created corporation — 42 wards, about 2.7 lakh voters — and Silchar’s first civic poll in six years.
44 seats across 11 wards; nominations close 26 Sep. Model code of conduct in force.
Overdue since 2021; the state government has said all pending panchayat elections will be held by the end of 2026, but the State Election Commission has not yet notified a schedule.
Terms of about 5,900 gram panchayats expired in Jan–Feb 2026 and administrators are running them. On 11 Sep 2026 the High Court recorded that ward formation and seat reservation for all 5,864 panchayats are complete and told the State Election Commission to go ahead; no schedule has been notified yet.
Likely after Durga Puja, alongside Howrah Municipal Corporation; the State Election Commission has not yet notified a date. Draft delimitation raises KMC from 144 to 209 wards (Howrah 50 to 68), with objections open until 5 Oct.
Five corporations (Central, North, South, East, West) that replaced the BBMP, 369 wards in all. In July 2026 the Supreme Court extended the deadline to 31 Dec because of the ongoing SIR of Karnataka’s voter rolls, and said it would not extend it again.
Covers Chennai Corporation and every other urban and rural local body in the state. Likely to be held in early 2027 because the Seventh State Finance Commission, which poll preparations depend on, was extended to 31 Dec 2026. No schedule has been notified yet.
Terms ended 26 May 2026. The polls were deferred until a dedicated OBC commission, formed in May 2026 with its report due around Nov 2026, finalises reservation; they are now expected only after the 2027 UP assembly election.
Originally planned for Oct–Nov 2026; pushed to 2027 after a delimitation exercise (Aug 2026–Apr 2027) reworked ward and seat boundaries.
250 wards. No schedule announced; the State Election Commission announces dates shortly before polling.
This list is hand-curated, not exhaustive. India runs local-body elections across thirty-odd states and union territories on staggered, often-litigated schedules — only rounds with a real, sourced announcement or credible government statement are listed here, each checked against its source as of the date shown.
Constitutional term dates are based on Election Commission of India records. Polling schedules are shown only after official announcement. View Methodology →

Frequently asked
Straight answers to the questions this page exists to answer.
Which by-elections are coming up in India?
6 by-elections are currently tracked here: Nandigram (West Bengal): polling 6 Oct 2026, counting 9 Oct 2026; Rejinagar (West Bengal): polling 6 Oct 2026, counting 9 Oct 2026; Madurantakam (SC) (Tamil Nadu): polling 6 Oct 2026, counting 9 Oct 2026; Dharapuram (SC) (Tamil Nadu): polling 6 Oct 2026, counting 9 Oct 2026; Thattanchavady (Puducherry): polling 6 Oct 2026, counting 9 Oct 2026; Nagaon (Assam): polling 6 Oct 2026, counting 9 Oct 2026. A by-election fills one vacant seat; it is not a general election.
When is the next Rajya Sabha election?
Polling and counting 16 Oct 2026 for 12 seats: Uttar Pradesh 10, Uttarakhand 1, West Bengal 1 (by-election). Rajya Sabha members serve six years and about a third of the house retires every second year, so elections come in rounds rather than all at once. Kerala (3 seats) is next due before 23 April 2027, and a large 70-seat round follows in 2028.
When are the next MLC (Legislative Council) elections?
Polling 23 Oct 2026 (counting 27 Oct) for 28 seats in the graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Only registered graduates and teachers vote in these seats, not the general public.
When is the next Presidential election in India?
The current President’s five-year term ends on 24 July 2027, and the election must be completed before then; the Election Commission has not announced a schedule. The President is chosen by an electoral college of MPs and members of the state legislative assemblies, not by a direct vote.
Which election is next in India?
No single date is officially announced. The soonest constitutional deadline belongs to the Goa assembly, whose current five-year term expires in Mar 2027 — an election there is due by then, even though the Election Commission has not yet announced a schedule.
Which states have elections due in 2027?
By 2027, five-year assembly terms expire for Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Each is due for an election by then, though exact dates are set by the Election Commission only weeks in advance.
Which states have elections in 2027?
Five-year assembly terms expire in 2027 for Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Each is due for an election by its own term-end date; the Election Commission announces exact schedules separately, closer to each poll.
When is the Punjab Assembly election due?
Punjab's current assembly term expires in Mar 2027, so an election is due there by then unless the house is dissolved earlier.
When is the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election due?
Uttar Pradesh's current assembly term expires in Mar 2027, so an election is due there by then unless the house is dissolved earlier.
When is the Gujarat Assembly election due?
Gujarat's current assembly term expires in Dec 2027, so an election is due there by then unless the house is dissolved earlier.
When does the current Lok Sabha term end?
The current Lok Sabha's five-year term runs until Jun 2029, so the next general election is due by then unless the house is dissolved earlier.
How are these election due dates calculated?
Article 172 of the Constitution gives a state assembly five years from the date of its first sitting, and Article 83 gives the Lok Sabha the same term for a general election. This page adds five years to each house’s most recent poll to get its constitutional deadline — the date by which an election must be held, not the date one is scheduled.
Can an Assembly election happen before its term ends?
Yes. A state assembly can be dissolved early — by the Governor on the advice of the council of ministers, or when no party can form a government — which triggers an election sooner than the five-year deadline. Some states also poll alongside the general election because their terms end in the same window — Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim did in 2024.
Who decides the election schedule?
The Election Commission of India, under Article 324 of the Constitution, sets and announces the phase-wise polling and counting dates for every general and state assembly election. It typically does so only a few weeks before voting begins.
Is the term-end date the same as the polling date?
No. The term-end date is the constitutional deadline by which an election must be completed — it is not when polling actually happens. The Election Commission holds elections before that deadline, on a schedule it announces separately, so the actual polling and counting dates can fall weeks or months earlier.
The clock runs from an assembly’s first sitting, which falls days to weeks after the count, so these dates are given to the month rather than the day. Seat counts are elective seats only: the nominated members some assemblies have are excluded, as they are not elected. Rows marked “not in this dataset” were polled after the bulk source behind this site was published in June 2023 — the date is hand-entered so the term clock stays right, and the result will appear here when the source is next updated. See methodology for what that source covers.
